Personal response and rating: I would give this book a 4; I like that this book had a variety of different poems that included both classic poems writers like Emily Dickinson and William Shakespeare and more current poetry writers like Mary Ann Hoberman and Walter de la Mare. The only part that I was not as found of was that there were a few poems that would be hard for young children to understand like the poem First They Came for the Jews by Martin Niemöller.

Reading strategies connection: In Literature-Based Reading Activities by Ruth Yopp and Hallie Yopp there is a learning activity called a carousel (R. Yopp & H. Yopp, 2010). A picture carousel is an activity that has students in small groups walk to different poster hung around the classroom (R. Yopp & H. Yopp, 2010). When a group of students get to a poster there will be a statement, question, queue or picture that the students responded to (R. Yopp & H. Yopp). Which is related to the text or classroom content that they are learning about (R. Yopp & H. Yopp, 2010). This activity is used to develop the students understanding of a text, thinking skills and inference making ability (R. Yopp & H. Yopp, 2010). For this activity the teacher just needs large sheets of paper and writing utensil (R Yopp & H. Yopp, 2010). This activity would be a prefect match for the Poems to Learn By Heart because learning and understand poetry can be challenging genre for some students to understand. By doing a carousel activity the student will need think critically about what topic or idea that the poem is about and think of way to expended from this topic or idea into everyday life.
